It’s the end of September and that means the Oroville Salmon Festival is coming up! To help get ready for the big event the FRRPD (Feather River Recreation Parks District) holds an annual clean up day. We partnered with them to cook the lunch for the Volunteers. Our Key Clubs were well represented out helping clean up the park.

We had the 75th annual Kiddies’ Day Parade! This years theme “Day on the Farm” brought out some fun costumes. The kids had blast getting to be from and center of their very own parade. We can’t wait to see them back at the 76th.

The Oroville Kiwanis Pancake Crew was at it again to help out the Palermo Little League! The usual suspects were in attendance, as well as a couple new members.

The 2nd annual Kiwanis Science Fair turned out to be a great success! The kids showed up excited and ready to show off their hard work. It was wonderful to see the display boards, but really amazing to hear how much they had to talk about when working through the scientific method for their projects. We were able to hand out large cash prizes to 1st ($500), 2nd ($250), and 3rd ($125) in each grade 5th through 8th!

Oroville Director Vincent Kurland presented the Stanford Avenue School Principal, Jessica North, with a $450 check to help sponsor kids for their new after school soccer program. The children will have the opportunity to work directly with college athletes from Chico State University.

Oroville Kiwanis Director Laurie Sousa presented a $500 Sponsorship check to Varsity Coach Kayla Gonzales and Coach Becky Horn. The funds will be used for the Oroville High School’s “Duard Millet” Girls Basketball Tournament. There will be 22 teams playing at this year’s tournament. This long standing tournament has been ongoing since 1976.

Oroville Kiwanis Board Director Vincent Kurland presented member Alwina Ainios Captain at the Oroville Salvation Army with a $1,000 check. This donation is going towards their Angel Tree program, to provide toys to children in our community, as well as helping to purchase food for their holiday food program.

It was time once again for the Oroville Kiwanis Club Pheasant Hunt. This has been a continuous, long standing, event for the club. Director Gary Leonard and President Monte Uchida planned another very successful day. It’s a true club event, and once again we hosted over 40 hunters.

Saturday afternoon Kiwanis Club Director Laurie Sousa was still at it helping her Key Club host their first Santa’s Workshop event. With the help of the Oroville Kiwanis donation the Key club was able to make their first Santa’s workshop a memorable one.

Saturday morning was the start of a very busy weekend for Kiwanis. After a few year hiatus we were happy to once again partner with the Feather River Parks and Recreation District for “Breakfast with Santa”! Oroville Kiwanis along with the Key Club hosted and served over 100 guests a pancake and sausage breakfast.

Oroville Kiwanis Director Laurie Sousa presented the Oroville High School Key Club with a $500 donation for their upcoming event on December 2nd, Santa’s Workshop. The donation is meant to get the Key Club off and going for their first event.

Donna Powers with the Municipal Law Enforcement of Oroville came to present a program called “Shoes that Fit”. The Oroville Police Officers Association has been a part of the program for many years. Shoes that Fit provide our local school age children with over-worn/no shoes with a brand new pair. Shoes that Fit believe new shoes help kids have dignity, joy, and confidence.
This program aligns perfectly with our mission and values, so we decided as a club to make a $3,000 donation and make an impact in our community. We also plan to challenge the Rotary Club to match our donation!

City of Oroville recycling coordinator Victoria Padilla presented to the club about SB 1383 (the requirement to sort and separately collect food scraps). She helped explain the “why” behind the new requirements. She also took the time to answer the many questions our club had.

Kiwanis Club of Oroville partnered with the Oroville YMCA to bring Fore! the Kids Golf Tournament. Fore our first year we were happy with the turnout. Even though no one won the hole and one grand prize players had a great time. We look forward to our next 18!

It’s 100°F, schools out, and the days are long; it must be time for the Oroville Kiwanis Club to sell Fireworks! We had a great turnout of members helping out, but as usual President Monte and Director Laurie put in the long days to make the fundraiser a great success. It was once again a fruitful fundraiser for the club and the Oroville High School Wrestling team.

This activity is so much more than just painting, it promotes pride, volunteerism, hard work, and being community minded in our youth. In addition to these great characteristics it promotes in our youth it does also help make the community safer, and better maintained.

The K-9 Unit of the Butte county Sheriff’s Department represented by K-9 Deputy Drew Miller, Sergeant Manuel Ayala, and K-9 Correctional Sergeant Tyler Leonard, presented at the Kiwanis program meeting. They were seeking donations to fund a Sheriff’s office tracking K-9, K-9 equipment trailer and miscellaneous K-9 equipment. The K-9 unit presented some of the many benefits that they bring to the community such as de-escalation, apprehension, and narcotic enforcement/seizure. The unit expressed their excitement to bring a tracking K-9 to Sheriff’s office arsenal to help with missing / at risk people, and suspects.
